It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Agnes March of Peotone, IL, on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, after living her 94-year-old life to the fullest. She led a happy life surrounded by those she loved and cherished. She was the beloved wife and best friend to the late Dr. James March who preceded her in death on October 26, 1983. Agnes was born on September 1, 1929, in Chicago, the daughter of two hard-working, self-sacrificing parents, the late Peter and Helen Gianakos.
Her most important joy in life was being with her family. She leaves behind to cherish her memory and mourn her loss, children, Ellen (Thomas) Tribe, Anita March, and Dr. Peter (Elizabeth) March; grandchildren, James (Angela) March, Alexandra (Kevin) Ellis, and Dr. Edmund (Kameron) March; and great-grandchildren, William, Elizabeth, and Walter Ellis; Saylor and Jackson March; and Alleria March. She is also survived by a sister, Anne D’Aquila; sister-in-law, Marilyn Makropoulos; and many nieces and nephews.
From the time she was a young girl, Agnes loved reading, movies, theater, and people. She was a graduate of John Marshall High School and Roosevelt University. She had a nearly photographic memory for movies of the past and was a formidable Jeopardy contestant from the comfort of her own couch. Forever optimistic with a huge zest for life, she always retained her sense of curiosity. Her natural wit and sense of humor gave us much pleasure. She loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe and Asia as well as exploring the United States. Her independence as a traveler probably started from childhood when at age 10, she was put on a bus by herself to travel from Chicago to Arizona to visit relatives. She even managed to transfer buses in St. Louis on her own. One of her most cherished memories was a family trip to Greece in 2007. When not traveling, she enjoyed golfing and tending to her beautiful garden.
She was a member of the Peotone Jr. Women’s Club, friend of the Peotone Library, member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and board member and past president of the Chicago Drama League.
While she tried to embrace technology (much to the amusement of her grandchildren), she always preferred a phone call or talking to others in person. She faced the challenges of old age with fortitude and was grateful for her many blessings. We celebrate her indomitable spirit and will hold her memory in our hearts forever. Mom, we know you have reunited with dad in heaven and the two of you are once again dancing to your favorite Big Band era tunes.
Visitation will be held at Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., Father Nick Greanias officiating. The burial will be at Peotone Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Peotone Public Library or Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Kankakee, IL. May her memory be eternal.
