Romaine Thomas Gregg, age 90, of Peotone, IL, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. He was born on February 17, 1934, in Chicago, IL.
Romaine was an Airforce staff sergeant, having enlisted during the Korean war. He proudly spoke about his military service as a B29 super fortress tail gunner. He was part of the 307th Bomb Wing/Group (1950-1953) and enjoyed regular meetings with this group of patriots into his senior years. Upon returning from military duty, Romaine’s hobbies included stock car racing at the 87th Street Speedway and Soldier’s Field in Chicago. He proudly wore a checker flag tattoo as a memory of those times. Romaine was a trades man – who across his lifetime became expert at not one, but many trades. He was a welder, ironworker, overhead crane erector, electrician, plumber and carpenter. He could solve any contracting or construction problem and for this became a resource for many. He worked as a general contractor until his death. He never graduated from high school yet wrote three children’s books which were published and are available on Amazon, I rode my dad’s skinny tire bike, Kooter (A Frog), Do worms really sit down to eat. Romaine enjoyed having conversations about college football and politics. He was a conservative and a patriot.
Romaine was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Sue (nee Cara) and son, Thomas. Romaine is survived by his wife Dolores (nee Struhbar); son, Tony (Wendy) two daughters, Karen (Joel) Shull, Lynn (dec. Mike) Hayes; 11 grandchildren, Tricia (Tim) Sanders, Annie (Dan) Kois, Cara Hayes, Jessie Adams, Joel (Becca), Thomas, Chris (Sarah), Alex, Elyse, Ava and Juliet; 4 great grandchildren, Logan Sanders, Evan Hayes, Zach Kois, Macie Kois; 3 step-chidren, Timothy (Linda) Henshaw, Lori (Jeffery) Benoit, and Kevin (Saren) Henshaw; and 8 step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church of Manteno, 300 E 3rd St, Manteno, Il 60950, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Funeral services and military honors will be held at the same location on February 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Interment Services will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL, Thursday February 13, 2025, at 1:30 PM.
